On Friday the 13th, il Duomo in Milan became an extension of a soccer stadium for three hours thanks to the magic of Cannon, who broadcast the teeth-quenching match through a live size screen.
Not being a soccer fan myself (please don’t kill me), I was drawn to this soccer phenomenon, particularly to the language of hands: Clenched fists. Palms together in prayer. Nervous hands puffing away. A few covering faces in disbelief.But my favorite hand gesture came in as soon as the commercials kicked in. All of a sudden, these everyday soccer fans became professionals press agents. In less than three seconds the unfailing reporters had cell-phones in hand, reporting in minute detail the events of the last 20 minutes. Absolutely priceless.
Truth: It doesn’t take a reporter to broadcast the news. Opportunity: Democratize news reporting! Often we complain that our news sources are biased by politics and bureaucracy. Why not give people a chance to tell their own, personal story. It will, no doubt, be biased. Are we able to tell fact from opinion? Maybe not, but we will never know if we don't try.
